David Benson

Level 2-Tai Chi Yoga

Bio: David Benson has practiced and taught therapeutic Tai Chi Yoga since 1999. He holds a Masters Degree in Psychology and Integrative Yoga from Antioch University Santa Barbara that includes a 750 hour Professional Yoga Therapists Certification from leading therapeutic teacher trainer Joseph Le Page of Integrative Yoga Therapy. David's primary Tai Chi training was conferred by Master Fu Yuan Ni; under whom David studied the Right, Left and Combination Yang Style Long forms as well as Tai Chi Sword, Tai Chi Saber and Wutang Solo Fencing.

David began integrating classical Tai Chi and Yoga practices into a single form during his tenure teaching therapeutic classes for individuals with chronic illnesses at facilities such as Sarah House (a living center for individuals with HIV), the Multiple Sclerosis Wellness Center, Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital and the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara. He further developed his technique while teaching strength and mobility classes for seniors (many in their late 90s) at local living centers such as Casa Dorinda, Maravilla, Villa Santa Barbara, and Buena Vista.

David has studied Hands-on-healing and bodywork at Santa Barbara Body Therapy Institute, and in Cheri Clampett's Therapeutic Teacher Trainings. David's unique bodywork method that integrates Mat-based Pilates, Restorative Yoga and Therapeutic Tai Chi has been featured in Spa Magazine. He is currently pursuing the 1000 hour Holistic Health Care Practitioner's certification at Santa Barbara Bodyworks.

Over time, as David explored both practice and teaching in all aspects of the Yoga Studio environment with well over 40 different instructors, he came to appreciate the great benefits that classical Tai Chi philosophy, practice and principles can offer to general Yoga practitioners. David believes that Tai Chi's sensitivity and mindfulness is a means by which many Yoga students may avoid and/or overcome many common Yoga related injuries as well as gain a variety of insights and tools that will enhance their Yoga practice for life. David is a creative, compassionate and humorous teacher whose teaching practice springs from a life long love of movement sports, martial arts and intuitive dance.

David has recently returned from a seven month sabbatical at Deer Park Monastery where he studied Engaged Buddhism with Zen master and peace-worker Thich Nhat Han. His most current interest lies in studying the relationship between Tantric and Taoist philosophy and practice as a means of cultivating an ever deepening personal wellness and awakening.

His classes: David Benson's Tai Chi Yoga classes provide a creative context in which David guides his students in how to use Tai Chi philosophy and technique to improve their understanding and practice of classical Yoga forms. As a work in progress, David envisions his method as a long slow conversation between two ancient traditions of personal awakening that leads to an ever deepening understanding, appreciation and respect for both.

Pre & Post Natal Yoga, $12

Bio: Ana Cláudia Cannon is from Recife, Brazil. Her passion for physical activities transformed her in a certified Yoga Instructor, graduating from YogaWorks Teacher Training in LA in 2009 and recently relocating here to Santa Barbara.

Her unique cross culture approach invites the newest beginner to the most seasoned yogi- sharing a practice that incorporates asana (body movement), pranayama (breath work), meditation (inner peace) all incorporated with Bhakti (Love and Devotion).

Her mission is for each person to realize themselves for who they are, our birthright of understanding the body which God created us to live in, to calm the minds perpetual games of fear and separation and to open to the heart of Love and Oneness.

Her classes: Depending on the day’s mood, she will attentively respond with mixes Vinyasa Flow, Meditation and Chanting. Her goal is to achieve what is already within so we can live our true essence going beyond the physical practice – ASANA- to stretch our souls and open our hearts. She creates a ritual using SANKALPA which is an intention, prayer or dedication and flows connecting breath and movement on her vinyasa sequences.

Pre and Post Natal Classes: This Shakti Sadhana is the moment that we take together, to practice women's empowerment of body, mind and spirit during the preparation to give birth and after it. We take time to share how each one is feeling in order to take ourselves to a place where we can live in our highest level so we can help creating a new life for a new being. Ana highly recommends that the Yoga Practice extends after giving birth since she considers Yoga not only something to be done to strengthen our bodies to give birth. For her, the teachings of Yoga aim loving union with the Divine, Supreme Force and the connection with the Source which are essential during our entire lives.

Victoria De Maio, CYI, RYT-500

Level 1

Bio: An avid student and dedicated teacher, Victoria began to take yoga classes on a regular basis in the late ‘90’s, well into "mid-life". Never having been a dancer or particularly athletic, "I found a home for my body – and, as it turned out, for my mind and spirit as well. To say that yoga has changed my life is an understatement!" A newfound passion was ignited and her entire life took a new direction. Within two years she enrolled in Erich Schiffmann's teacher training and left the corporate world behind. She started teaching immediately and hasn't looked back since!

Having the privilege and honor of studying with many excellent teachers, her teaching style has been most profoundly influenced by her advanced studies with highly respected yoga master Rama Jyoti Vernon and her initial teacher training with Erich Schiffmann. Victoria's growth as a student and teacher has been an ongoing passion. In addition to completing her 200 hour level teacher certification in 2000 , in 2005, after two years of comprehensive study, she completed her 500 hour certification with Rama and guest faculty through the International Yoga College.

Victoria’s love and enthusiasm for teaching yoga are apparent to all who enter her class. Her warmth and genuine caring quickly put even the most inexperienced novice at ease. Her maturity and life experience bring a unique wisdom, empathy, and compassion to her teaching. Particularly sensitive to the needs and issues of the baby boomer generation, she empathizes with those starting a yoga practice at mid life and beyond as well as those coming from the stress and pressure of a corporate environment.

Her class: Victoria’s teaching style is traditional hatha yoga with a strong emphasis on mindfulness and moment-to-moment awareness of form and breath. As John Kabat-Zinn says, "in mindful yoga, exquisite attention is paid to (the) body and body sensations." Being mindful in our practice, our practice becomes a moving meditation guided by the breath.

Available for individual or group private sessions as well as stress management/workplace workshops, you can learn more about Victoria on her website: www.LifestyleYoga.com or contact her at LifestyleYoga@aol.com.

Level 1: Mon, Wed & Fri, 10:30 am- 12:00 pm

Jill Denison

Gyrokinesis

Bio: Jill has been a dancer practically her whole life, ever since her mother enrolled her dance class at the age of three. A Wyoming native, she left when she was 18 to pursue dance on the east coast. She participated in the dance program at the Hartford Conservatory of Music and Dance, then transferred to the dance conservatory at the State University of New York (Purchase) where she was first exposed to Gyrokinesis.

After a hamstring injury ten years ago, she used Gyrokinesis and Gyrotonic to rehabilitate her body. Having felt the immense change from an injured body to an efficient, supported body, she couldn't stop learning; at which point she went through the teacher training. Jill has studied extensively with Juliu Horvath, and continues to learn more about this system by taking continuing education courses.

Jill has trained or taught in China, Japan, Italy, and in many cities throughout the United States. During the summer of 2009, she taught at the LINES Ballet School Summer Program in San Francisco, at which point she decided to move to California from the east coast. She is happy her path has lead to Santa Barbara, and is happy to be a part of Santa Barbara Yoga Center. Jill is also the owner of Gyrotonic Santa Barbara. www.gyrotonicsantabarbara.com

Her class: Gyrokinesis exercises allow one to work on the entire body through seven natural elements of spinal movement: forward, backward, left side, right side, left twist, right twist, and circular as well as all other joint articulation. This approach systematically and gently works the joints and muscles through, rhythmic and undulating movements. These movements stimulate the body's internal organs while different corresponding breathing patterns are integrated along with the movements.

Fluidity is the key. Postures are not held for long periods of time. Instead, postures are smoothly and harmoniously connected through the use of breath, making exercises appear and feel more like a dance and swimming than like traditional yoga.

A typical Gyrokinesis class begins with participants practicing self massage and simple breathing patters, something Juliu Horvath has named, “Awakening of the Senses.” The the spine and pelvis are engaged through simple exercises: while seated on low stools, participants mobilize the spine through a series of arching, curling, bending, twisting and spiraling movements. These same movement patterns are expeanded to release the hip, knee, hamstring, quadriceps, and so on, in all possible directions: front, back, twisting, and turning. The corresponding breathing patterns executed during every movement stimulate the nervous system, open up the energy pathways and oxygenate the blood. All Gyrokinesis classes, from beginner to advanced, encompass not only sitting but also lying and standing positions. Those who practice Gyrokinesis, tend to be more relaxed in their daily lives and can move with increased flexibility and ease.

When:
Gyrokinesis 60 Min. Format, $12: Tuesday, 6:30-7:30 pm

Natalie Gutierrez
alissa

Yin & Therapuetic Yoga

Bio: Having received certification as a Hatha yoga instructor in 2006, Natalie has developed a teaching style that is eclectic and soothing. Her focus is on creating a softening in the body so that the more challenging postures can be entered into from a relaxed, receptive state. By blending the yin practices of yoga (both restorative and therapeutic), Natalie guides students to flow between mindful movement and introspective stillness.

Natalie has taught yoga in studios and in corporate settings. From 2006 – 2009, Natalie taught “brown bag yoga” or “lunch break yoga” in large consulting and law firms in Sacramento. By teaching in the workplace, Natalie began to sequence classes that would support people who sit for long hours by placing special emphasis on neck, shoulders, hips, and wrists. She also began to teach the “30 second yoga break” – half down dog at the desk, wall-supported forward folds, wall-supported mountain pose, and breath awareness. These classes were very well received and incorporated into the corporate structure as a way to prevent repetitive stress injury and as a hiring incentive.

Natalie received her training and certification thorough Lori Moore at My Yoga Lounge in Sacramento - Lori is an Ashtanga instructor, trained and mentored by Ana Forrest. Shortly after receiving her certification, Natalie began to study the books and DVDs by Judith Lassiter and began teaching the restorative yoga classes offered at My Yoga Lounge. Early in 2009, Natalie attended the week long Therapeutic Yoga Teacher Training with Cheri Clampett and Arturo Peal at the White Lotus Foundation in Santa Barbara and immediately incorporated techniques learned there (healing touch, guided meditation, specific supported postures) into her classes.

For more information on the benefits of a yoga practice or to schedule a private consultation you can reach Natalie at:

nataliemgutierrez@gamil.com or 805.563.9496

Her class: Suitable for almost all levels of students, Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasize internal heat and the lengthening and contracting of our muscles. Yin Yoga invites a gently release of the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and even the joints of the body. There is an emphasis placed on the movement of the breath through the body and the quieting of the mind.

Taught in the Yin yoga tradition, this class begins with gentle yoga poses that guide students through slow movements that tone, strengthen, and encourage balance and healthy posture. Standing and balancing poses are often done with the support of the wall to allow the student to remain relaxed and supported while increasing balance and flexibility. The class then moves into restorative poses using bolsters, blankets, and other props that are typically held for 3-5 minutes. These longer held supported postures encourage deep relaxation with the added benefits of healing touch, guided meditation, soothing music and aroma therapy.

This class is perfect for new yoga students, seniors, and those recovering from injury or illness. The class is especially helpful to those seeking to incorporate relaxation and stress reduction into their lives.

When:
Yin & Therapeutic Yoga: Monday/Wednesday, 6:30-7:55 pm

Mary Cate Hauenstein

Relax & Rejuvenate

Bio: Mary Cate first found herself practicing yoga in 2000 after a series of injuries from gymnastics and rowing forced her to take a medical leave from Brown University, where she was an undergraduate student. Instantly, she knew that she would be practicing yoga for the rest of her life. In 2006 Mary Cate was trained to teach Iyengar style yoga, focusing on correct body alignment that allows the body to develop harmoniously in an anatomically correct way so that the student suffers no injury or pain when practicing. In 2007 her Iyengar teacher, Trishka Lemos, recognized her advanced ability to be present and focused during practice and recommended that she go to Pune, India, where she could learn from senior Iyengar teachers. Although infinitely grateful for her experience at the Iyengar center, including hearing Guruji speak on his 89th birthday, a desire to accelerate her spiritual path brought her to her teacher, Rod Stryker.

Mary Cate now spends time in each of her classes helping students get in touch with their deepest driving desires so that their practices lead to fulfillment. She uses Vinyasa Krama, which is a systematic approach to sequencing that allows the practitioner to move from where they are to a better place. She aims to be clear about where she wants to take students, and to then, through skillful knowledge of all the methods (pranayama, chanting, meditation, mudra, bandha, kriya, and visualization) take them there. She strives to make the journey as safe, efficient, and elegant, as possible.

Also a graduate student of clinical psychology, somatic psychology, she feels capable of addressing the needs of student's bodies, minds, psyches, and souls.

Her classes: The fundamental purpose of Mary Cate's class–no matter what the intensity, is to increase clarity, calmness, balance, alertness, confidence and ease. Perhaps most importantly, Mary Cate wants to help her students fulfill the desire to remember their best selves and rest in the feeling that is the real you, an everlasting source of tranquility and joy. She likes to joke and remind her students to have fun.

Yoga Ritual for Men

Bio: Stefan is a certified Kundalini Yoga teacher, who studied with Yogi Bhajan in Espanola, NM. He is also a business coach, published author, and former Top 100 ranked tennis player.

His class: "As men we live in dark times: our world is heavily influenced, if not dominated, by male energy. And, look around you at what this influence has generated. We are confused about who we are as men, often acting from shadow. We lack a spiritual education and a thorough introduction into what it means to be a man. We have lost our center, our sacred masculinity! The Yoga Ritual offers an opportunity for men to find themselves through the ancient tradition of Kundalini Yoga, meditation, chanting, and cleansing. This spiritual and physical workout will support you to balance the power centers (chakras) in your body, confront the limitations of the mind, and transcend into higher spheres of connection with yourself and spirit. A perfect way to start the day! It's a challenging, yet gentle and deeply relaxing technique of connecting with the power of the archetypal energies in each man: the Lover, the Warrior, the Magician, and the King!"

Dana Karpain
dana

Level 1–2 Integral Yoga

Bio -Dana’s interest in Yoga began over 25 years ago in Santa Barbara, California with his interest in Raja Yoga and its practices that lead to self-understanding and self-realization. He first met his Teacher Sri Swami Satchidananda back in the 1980’s when he would attend Swamiji’s silent yoga retreats at La Casa De Maria Retreat Center in Montecito. Dana’s yoga practices continued and deepened when he decided to move back East to assist Sri Swami Satchidananda and his Yoga devotees in building and establishing Satchidananda Ashram-Yogaville, VA, (www.yogaville.org) and the Light Of Truth Universal Shrine or L.O.T.U.S. (www.lotus.org). For 18 years Dana had the privilege of studying the classic art and science of Yoga, under the guidance of the world-renowned Yoga master, and founder of Yogaville and “Integral Yoga” Sri Swami Satchidananda, (www.swamisatchidananda.org).

At Yogaville Dana went on to take a comprehensive four year training to become a legally ordained Yoga Minister. Even though Yoga often appears to be associated with Eastern faiths, in its pure form, Yoga is not in and of itself a faith or religion. Rather, Yoga is a system of natural techniques that are all intended to ultimately calm the mind. A calm mind may then naturally reflect the individuals own natural inner peace and divinity through whatever faith or form one chooses. The Yoga Minister training incorporates a thorough knowledge of the Eastern wisdoms as well as the practices of Yoga. This knowledge is made practical through techniques that include counseling, goals consulting, as well as performing services such as weddings, baby blessings and funerals.

In addition, Dana went on to complete his Hatha Yoga Teacher Training to become a certified Yoga and Meditation Instructor. As a Yoga Instructor and Minister, Dana has served his community over the last 25 years through yoga class instruction, counseling, goals consulting, and services that utilize the Eastern wisdom and principles of Raja Yoga, which include Hatha, Japa, Karma, Bhakti, and Jnana Yoga.

Before leaving Yogaville Dana undertook a fourteen month pilgrimage around the world, visiting six continents and over twenty-five countries. He visited and explored many sacred sites and indigenous healers, learning alternative ways of self-transformation.

Dana has come full circle and returned to his beloved Santa Barbara, California where he currently lives. For more information, please visit Dana's website: www.youryogaclass.blogspot.com

His classes: Explore the classic art and science of Yoga utilizing restorative, strengthening and meditative Integral Yoga methods to promote health, strength, flexibility, and peace of mind. Breathing techniques, (pranayama) are coupled with postures (asanas) to align the skeletal system, tone the muscles, stretch the ligaments and tendons while fostering a sense of internal harmony and balance. A deep progressive relaxation, followed by a short meditation, at the end of the class helps to relieve tension and anxiety and assists you in feeling your best. FIRST TWO consecutive Integral Yoga classes FREE.

Enlightenment
“When you forget your true nature and look for happiness in external ways, that focus is the basic ignorance. Enlightenment, and the aim of all the Yoga practices, is to stop anything from disturbing the mind so that it can reflect the Happiness that is your true nature. When you walk away from the light you seem to be chasing after things, like your own shadow. If you simply turn and walk towards the light, automatically your shadow, and all the things you were chasing after, suddenly come chasing after you.” —Sri Swami Satchidananda

Sarah Tuttle

Iyengar Style Yoga

Bio: Sarah Tuttle began her study of yoga and meditation in 1980. In 1992, she began teaching in a rural corner of the Northwest. Though the population there was not typically the type to seek yoga, Sarah's passionate yet practical approach drew students from every age and walk of life. This quickly led to the opening of her studio.

Teaching in the Iyengar style, Sarah is attentive to her student’s individual needs and capabilities. She inspires them to work deeply, fostering a self-awareness that is relative to every area of life. A sufferer of seizures in her youth, scoliosis since the age of 12, and a mother of four, Sarah knows firsthand the transformative benefits a yoga practice brings.

As BKS Iyengar says, "Asana is perfect firmness of body, steadiness of intelligence, and benevolence in spirit." Sarah's many years of applied experience and her love of yoga guides her students on this path.

Sarah is new to Santa Barbara and has been a registered yoga teacher through Yoga Alliance (RYT-500) since 2002. She was the original co-owner and founder of Bheka Yoga Supplies Company.

Her class: Following the Iyengar method, students are taught a wide array of poses that develop stamina, flexibility, balance, and concentration. They become educated about the benefits of the poses and how to practice them correctly.

Due to the great attention to detail, students gain a sharpening of awareness that strengthens them physically, intellectually, and psycho-emotionally. They experience an increase in vitality as they develop methods for relieving stress.

Props are used to aid in correct structural alignment as well as safely modifying poses for students who have limited mobility due to injury or illness.

Beginning level students build an excellent foundation for years to come. Experienced practitioners appreciate the depth and comprehensiveness of every class.

Students of all levels and abilities are progressively challenged while gaining a personal understanding of how to continue on this path of lasting and therapeutic change.

Anne Van De Water

Level 2 & Teacher Training Modules

Bio: Anne Van de Water has been practicing yoga informally since she was four years old. Her dedicated, formal training began in 1992 and she has been a devoted practitioner ever since. Anne loves yoga so much that she became a teacher of this ancient art and science in 1994 so that she could be in the yoga zone all day long and share yoga’s gifts with the greater public. Anne has studied and practices Ashtanga, Iyengar, Flow, Sivananda, Yin, Restorative, Hatha, Partner, Therapeutic and Kundalini yoga and Buddhist, Transcendental and Sound meditation. She received her first yoga teacher’s training certification from the White Lotus in 1994 and continued her studies of Iyengar and Sivananda yoga in India. She received her Integrative Yoga teacher’s training certificate in 1996 and trained with Sarah Powers and Paul Grilley in 2002. In 2007 she was given Yoga Alliance's Experienced Registered Yoga teacher accredidation with nearly 10,000 hours of yoga taught as of 2010. Anne has traveled the world teaching yoga in California, Arizona, Hawaii, New York City, Indonesia, Thailand, India, London, Amsterdam, and Brazil. She has taught in yoga centers, gyms, hospitals, schools, offices, AIDS recovery homes, cancer centers, retreat centers and at yoga teacher trainings. In 2000 Anne created a yoga program for students and teachers in the public elementary and high schools of Santa Barbara called Yoganesha™ and has been teaching her Yoganesha Teaching Yoga to Children training since 2002. Anne holds a B.A. in Religious Studies from UCSB and has been a certified massage therapist since 1990 and incorporates hands on healing into her yoga classes. She currently lives in Santa Barbara, CA. where she teaches yoga classes to the public at Santa Barbara Yoga Center, private sessions at people’s homes, at the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara, and in the public and private schools of Santa Barbara.

Her class: As a certified Yoga Therapist, Anne’s approach to yoga and her classes is compassionate and loving. As an aspiring spiritual warrior, her approach is disciplined and focused. As a lover of life, her approach is fun and easy going. Her intention is to blend these elements into her classes so that each session is wholistically balanced. She has an “intuitively eclectic” style of teaching, drawing upon the many forms of yoga she has studied and practiced while tuning into the particular needs of the group she is working with. In each unique class, there is a strong emphasis on breath to invigorate the body and calm the mind. We rest in the stillness and peace of yin and restorative yoga poses while focusing on being rather than doing. We fluidly move with strength and flexibility through flow yoga poses where we focus on precision of alignment and self-empowerment. Kundalini Yoga, tai chi and chi gong are encorporated into classes to help move and harness life force energy. Time is spent in the silence of mediatation and oftentimes we chant mantras using the healing sound of our own voices to transform stagnant energy into vitally positive states of being. Anne is a singer and song writer and knows the power and healing effects of sound and sings soothing and uplifting mantras to her students to help relax the body and open the heart. Anne’s mission is to support her students in connecting to their natural state of present, open, wakefulness, and to live life in integrity with who they truly are so that what is practiced on the mat is carried out into their lives off the mat..
