What People are Saying

  • I am 81 and started yoga at 73. I call my classes the best gift I ever gave myself. Yoga has taught me to slow down in a world that is constantly on the go. I am more relaxed and manage stress more effectively. I am kinder to myself and overall in a better mood. My balance has improved along with some flexibility. I appreciate the meditation that goes along with the practice. It has encouraged me to meditate daily even when I am not in a yoga class. I have learned to take better care of myself. I encourage anyone to try it. It’s easy, relaxing and so beneficial.

  • I’m 80 years old. I believe my ongoing low impact, restorative yoga practice supports both my physical and my mental health as I age.

  • I'm very active and do long endurance bicycle rides. When I do yoga after riding, I have more energy and am not sore the next day. It’s amazing.

    — Jesse, 54 years old.

  • After practicing yoga for years in my 30s and 40s, I returned to it at 55 years old during the pandemic when I experienced low back pain. Within weeks my low back pain was gone and hasn’t returned since. Now 61 years old, I also practice yoga to improve balance, strengthen my bones and stay limber; poses like Warrior, Triangle and others are known bone strengtheners.

  • I have found that Yoga is beneficial for my aging process as it improves my strength, balance, and flexibility, which has helped prevent falls and maintain mobility.  Additionally, it supports mental well-being and reduces stress, contributing to my overall health and longevity.

    — Jennifer, 48 years old.

  • I am 75 and in reasonably good health. I want to keep it that way. I find that through a practice of yoga I can help maintain my balance, my flexibility, my alignment of body and my general good health. It is a joy to be part of this studio. I will hopefully add years of good health to my life.

    — Lois

  • My yoga practice helps me focus on posture and tiny details in and of body. This carries over to the rest of my day, clearing my mind of clutter and confusion.

    — Tom

  • I’m 73 and yoga is the most important aspect of my flourishing. The benefits are many: I used to need a chiropractor regularly to alleviate episodic back pain. Now, I rarely have back strain and the symptoms resolve much quicker. I am a professor and have been prone to live much of my life above the neck, now I inhabit the rest of my body more fully. I have come to understand that yoga is a holistic vision of life. It includes contemplative practices that access our essence nature. I now seek practices that nourish my physical body, mind, soul, and spirit. I am mindfully entering the last phase of my life. Thanks to yoga, I feel able to do that with joy, equanimity, and appreciation for the great web of life of which I am a part.

    — Patrick

  • Yoga has helped me with many issues—some chronic for me and many related to aging.  My regular practice at SBYC has improved lower back pain, allowed me to reduce my thyroid medication, reduced chronic headaches and has improved my mood.  Whenever I think to myself, “I’m too tired (or whatever—fill in the blank) to go to yoga today,” I remember that inevitably I will feel better after going.  And I always do.  In addition, SBYC has a beautiful community of teachers and practitioners that benefits me in countless ways.  Thank you, SBYC, for being a beautiful and consistent light in my life.

    — Susan 73 years old

  • I am 67 years old and yoga is the reason I feel so vital. With the aches and pains that come with age, yoga keeps my muscles and joints strong and lubricated. I also find as my practice deepens, it is a spiritual practice as well. It is so powerful for my mind body and soul. I am grateful everyday for my practice and I know I will continue for the rest of my life.

    — Anne

  • Yoga encourages me to stretch and extend my physical and mental being, thereby strengthening the body that is carrying me through this life. The time dedicated to breath work and poses also allows me to center myself, regardless of what is happening.

  • I’m 73 and have multiple sclerosis and severe arthritis; both of which have caused varying degrees of disability.  I have had three joint replacements with likely two more replacements to come. Practicing yoga has significantly improved my mobility and increased my strength and stamina. I feel so much better, younger, and happier practicing yoga. Highly recommend!

    — Sharon

  • At 57 years old, my practice continues to give me clarity and confidence in body and mind. It strengthens the connection between them, helps prevent injury, supports healing, and keeps me strong, present, and focused.

    — Lisa

  • Attending yoga classes regularly at 68 years old offers me a much needed sense of community with others who share the value of wellness in their lives. I rank yoga as one of the top practices for vitality in my life.

Agility · Strength · Flexibility · Balance

Research consistently shows that yoga supports physical function in older adults by improving balance, gait, strength, and mobility. Regular yoga practice has been associated with reduced frailty, better walking ability, improved postural stability, and greater confidence with movement -- key factors for fall prevention and maintaining independence as we age.

Decreased Inflammatory Response · Joint Care · Healthy Posture

Yoga has been shown to reduce markers of chronic inflammation while supporting joint health, spinal alignment, and pain management. Research highlights yoga’s role in improving posture, decreasing musculoskeletal discomfort, and supporting conditions such as arthritis and chronic low back pain—important contributors to quality of life in aging populations.

Brain Health · Cognitive Function · Mental Acuity

Emerging research suggests yoga may play a protective role in brain health by supporting attention, memory, executive function, and emotional regulation. Studies link yoga and other mind-body practices to positive changes in brain structure and function, particularly in areas related to aging, stress resilience, and cognitive decline.

Stress Management · Improved Sleep · Increased Energy and Vitality

Yoga and breath-based practices are strongly associated with reductions in stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, as well as improvements in sleep quality and overall vitality. These practices help regulate the nervous system, lower physiological arousal, and support emotional well-being—key components of healthy aging.
